About this event

Thanks to the Collegiate Athletes for selecting us for the 2011 USA Powerlifting Collegiate Championships is scheduled for April 1st – 3rd at the Hilton in downtown Scranton.

My history starts in High School Powerlifting in Pennsylvania, but where things really got started was when I established the Penn State Powerlifting Team back in 1996. As an athlete with that team, we were able to start from nothing and actually able to compete for team titles, placing second place as a team in 1999. With just 12 lifters, we had three of our athletes compete at the IPF Junior Worlds. I later coached West Point at the 2001 and 2002 Collegiate Nationals. I have seen and been part of some great Collegiate National events. I am still a LIFTER first, I am able compete at the IPF level events including the Arnold, so I bring the unique meet director and lifter perspective to every event I run.

We have put this event in the heart of Scranton, Pennsylvania, which is known by mainstream from the NBC show “The Office”. This small city is located among three local Universities, which give this small city a college town feel. There are night clubs, coffee shops, movie theatres and a mall all with-in a few blocks of this venue. The cost of this venue will be $99 a night, with an airport shuttle service that costs $5 per person. You will find flying or driving is very easy into this location.

We plan to run this event two platforms, we plan to run projectors for the audience, re-images of the computer scoring in the back stage area and closed circuit tv on both lifting platforms.

We are investigating putting this whole event weekend on UStream, along with having the results published to the event web site as the event progresses.

We will be promoting this event to mainstream media including ABC, NBC and CBS affiliates.

We look forward to hosting one of the largest Collegiate Nationals in the history of USA Powerlifting.

Thanks, Steve Mann
Event Director
